The lyrics

1. She sailed from England,
A lifetime passing,
Sometime before the world was back at war again.
This lonely island, so far from homeland,
What would she do?
Where would she go?
How would it end?

2. She went to cities
Around the seaboard,
Unlike the places she had left so far behind.
This monstrous island, so old and silent,
What would she do?
Where would she go?
What would she find?

Bridge: She left the cities for the outback wild and vast,
Tried hard to put behind her European past.

3. This English woman,
So young and fragile,
Was left to struggle with her feelings of despair.
Her isolation,
So deep and silent,
How would she ever learn to breathe Australian air?

The story

Australian Air deals with migration from England, particularly between the two world wars, to the wild, vast place that was Australia. The song ends by asking the question:

How would she ever learn to breathe Australian air?
