The lyrics

1. Molten red explosion,
Wrenching crust, upward thrust,
Wind and fire collusion,
Heaving earth giving birth.
Splitting, sliding, tilting, colliding,
Shifting south in a southern ocean,
An island adrift in the sea.

2. Over there horizon,
Curving arc, light and dark,
Solid rock and desert,
Ghostly gum, silent hum.
Shifting south in a southern ocean,
An island adrift in the sea.

Bridge: People came from deep within the dreaming,
Sang their songs and gave the land its meaning.

3. Great birds flew with wings at full extension,
Invaders came with fully blown intention
To anchor this island in the sea.

The story

Shifting South maps the development of Australia as an island continent, from pre-historic times to the coming of the first Australians and eventually the arrival of white Europeans.
